It doesn’t break the mould, but ‘The Hives Forever Forever The Hives’ captures the celebratory air of the Swedish garage-punk legends’ sound wonderfully — almost 30 years since the release of their debut they remain playful, energetic and propulsive.
Enough is Enough immediately feels like classic Hives, cut from the same cloth as stadium anthems such as Hate To Say I Told You So and Tick Tick Boom. Pelle Almqvist is still in fine voice and the band still know how to make a rollicking anthem.
Their trademark spirit and sense of fun is still clearly apparent on Hooray Hooray, Hooray, a short, sharp rocker that does what it says on the tin. It’s easy to picture warming up for an evening out to its slashing riffs.
Another standout is Paint a Picture, which has real Ramones energy to it, both in Pelle’s vocals and its dirty downstrokes. O.C.D.O.D, meanwhile, is 1 min 45 of full throttle rock ‘n’ roll that shows these old prizefighters still pack a punch.
In many ways, ‘The Hives Forever Forever The Hives’ feels like everything that makes the group unique distilled into a single LP. Their live shows continue to be thrilling and visceral, and their new material shows that they’re not going to stop any time soon. Short and to the point, really delivering a sense of urgency, these songs rank among their most impressive work.
