Devin Townsend will release a new album later this spring.
The prolific Canadian metal musician and producer will release 'The Moth', the follow-up to 2024's 'PowerNerd', on May 29. Breaking the news on social media, he said:
"It is with a huge amount of relief, excitement and trepidation that I can finally reveal to you all that my new album The Moth is released on May 29 2026. Ten years in the making, The Moth is definitely one of the most ambitious albums I will ever make. I hope you enjoy it."
An extensive description of the record on Townsend's website says, "The Moth is Devin Townsend’s most ambitious work to date, a project that has existed in his mind as his life’s work – an immersive orchestral, choral, and theatrical project over a decade in the making. What began as a distant vision became reality when Townsend was invited to collaborate with the North Netherlands’ Orchestra and Choir.
The album has "a fully orchestrated narrative", with Townsend spending years relearning musical fundamentals to be able to write the score himself, though he was assisted by Joseph Stevenson.
It was recorded across more than 10 countries, and as well as the aforementioned North Netherlands Orchestra and Choir, features contributions from Townsend's long-time collaborators Darby Todd, Mike Keneally and James Leach, and guests Steve Vai, Anneke Van Giersbergen and Lynn Wu (Ou), plus hundreds of musicians, engineers, mixers and artists.
The final paragraph of the record's website description reads, "At its core, The Moth is about transformation. Through its soaring arrangements and intimate moments, the work explores self-acceptance, surrender, and the courage to face discomfort without turning away. The Moth is about the journey—but it is also about arrival."
As a preview, Townsend has shared a Studio Sparks-animated video for the album's first single, Enter The City, a sweeping and dynamic rock epic. Introducing it, he explained:
"In an album conceptualized around a journey of personal transformation, Enter The City falls near the beginning of our story arc. The song depicts a divided world, not unlike our own, where the inhabitants have become so disconnected from true unity that sex, power, and fear have turned into ugly proxies for the divine."
Back in spring 2025, the musician announced an indefinite hiatus from touring, citing personal reasons and the cost of travelling, so it's unclear if he will be taking the record on the road.
