In a move reminiscent to a scene from Wayne’s World, a Dublin-based keyboard shop has banned the playing of Adele’s ‘Someone Like You’ after the track was rinsed out by punters searching for a new instrument.
Just like Led Zeppelin’s ‘Stairway to Heaven’ was banned from the guitar shop in the comedy film, which starred Mike Myers and Dana Carvey, Adele’s super single has been forbidden at the Opus ii – with a sign to let customers know that playing ‘Someone Like You’, or any other Adele tune, is unacceptable.
“It's become the piano equivalent of 'Stairway to Heaven',” said a shop worker. “Everyone thinks they can play it. The sign was a bit of a joke, but the song can drive you mad.”
Another artist barred from the shop is Michael Nyman, after his soundtrack to the film ‘The Piano’ was similarly abused by potential buyers. ‘Für Elise’, a score by Beethoven, is another song which is frowned upon by staff.
