Shortlist Announced For BBC's Sound of 2012

Using tips and suggestions from the some of the country’s leading ‘tastemakers’, a collection of the leading music journalists, magazine chiefs and television/radio presenters and producers, the BBC has compiled a list of acts to be considered for the BBC Sound of 2012 Award.

The competition has been running for the past ten years and has seen winners like Keane, Adele and Ellie Goulding all pick up the accolade and go on to international success. The 15-strong list contains musicians and acts of varying age, genre and nationality, ranging from floppy-haired ‘bro-step’ producer Skrillex to OFWGKTA’s Frank Ocean. British acts among the list include Dot Rotten, Flux Pavilion, Michael Kiwanuka, Lianne La Havas, Ren Harvieu, Spector, Dry the River and Jamie N Commons.

Artists included in the list were chosen by the ‘tastemakers’, who were asked to name three new musical acts that are from any country or genre – as long as they’ve not had a top 20 UK single or album before November 13th and they’re not already part of a well known band and haven’t featured on a talent show like X-Factor.

BBC Radio 1’s head of music George Ergatoudis said: “The Sound of 2012 will be the 10th year of predictions compiled by BBC News - a project now established as the definitive annual list of exciting new artists to watch out for.

“The list will inspire debate for sure, but most importantly, it will lead to discovery of artists and musicians trying to stand out from the ever-expanding crowd, and that can only be a good thing.”

The winner of the Sound of 2012 award will be unveiled in January next year. A full list of nominees can be seen below - tell us who you think should win in the comments section below!
