Alex James Claims Blur 'Didn't Know' They Were Interrupting Adele

Alex James, bassist of Britpop legends Blur, has claimed that he and the rest of the band weren’t aware they cut Adele’s speech at the BRIT Awards last month – until they heard about the fiasco after the show.

Adele picked up the Mastercard British Album of the Year award at the show – her second award of the night – and was just a few seconds into her acceptance speech when host James Corden had to step in and cut her off, to assure Blur had enough time to perform their closing set.

The move angered many, with Adele flipping her middle finger to the crowd, Corden receiving a bit of abuse, and Blur slammed for their own lengthy acceptance speech for their ‘Outstanding Contribution to Music’ award. There have been apologies all round – but now Alex James has claimed that the band weren’t even aware that the superstar soul singer’s speech had been cut short to make way for them.

“That's live telly,” James told BBC Breakfast. “I don't think it overshadowed anything. We were up there backstage and didn't know what was happening until afterwards. I think Adele is amazing and has a fantastic career in front of her.”

You can catch Blur interrupting the Olympic Games this summer, where they’ll be performing at the closing ceremony alongside The Specials and New Order. If you need tickets to the show, where they’ll be performing a new track, check the link below.
