Scholars - Bad For Business (Single Review)

I'll admit, I had a feeling of dread when I heard the introduction to this. I thought it was going to be a Sum41-by-numbers piece that I was already dreading listening to the mandatory multiple number of times to write a proper review of. Then the lyrics begin and all is forgiven. Phew!

ImageWhile certainly not the best semi-pop-rock track of all time, the way the words are belted out akin to early Manic Street preachers material is refreshing. Loud, powerful, but tuneful and emotional all combined into one. The song itself is a jumpy, crowd pleasing frenzy of a rock track that doesn't really do anything too overly crazy or inappropriate or full-on, but keeps the whole thing wrapped up well, before ending two and a half minutes later without outstaying its welcome. Well done then.

The big negative? Well, it's got one of those annoying “ten seconds of shush” bits near the end where the singer gets all softy-voice and the guitars quieten down that I'm beginning to get really annoyed with in it. It seems like tracks like this have to have one of those ridiculous bridge sections in by contract and it's totally unnecessary. I was enjoying the merry stompy romp that was going on, I didn't need to be reminded they could could probably put together an emo ballad too. Save that for, well, any emo ballads. I can understand why it's there, and it does slam into the final chorus ok, but it just feels tacked on because everyone else does it, and that really grates on me.

Other than that, it's jolly good fun. Nothing hugely special or anything to get teens-for-Hunger-Games-style excited about, but it could have been a whole lot worse. These lads know how to write a good song in a tricky genre and that deserves credit where it's due.
