Former BBC Radio 1 DJ Tony Blackburn has put his credibility on the line with some comments he made to the Radio Times yesterday – after he claimed that Barbados-born beauty Rihanna was better than The Beatles or The Rolling Stones.
While Blackburn has been a DJ for around 40 years, and has a vast knowledge of music new and old, he'll definitely turn a few heads with his latest comments which have seen him hold new pop acts – for example, Rihanna – in a higher regard that some of the most influential and legendary bands in history.
As a man who was musically active from the 60s onwards, the Radio Times asked Blackburn about the particular decade, and suggested that the 60s was a 'golden age' of music – only for Blackburn to reply: “I actually think today's artists are better than those of yesteryear. The Beatles and the Stones just stood there with guitars and sang. These days, people like Rihanna can sing and dance and do everything.”
Blackburn isn't the only person who's compared The Beatles to musicians of today, with X-Factor boyband One Direction being tipped as the next incarnation of the world-famous group – something Beatles star Paul McCartney isn't at all happy about.
He said of the comparisons: “It's a pressure, because suddenly you've got to live up to all the things that we did, and it was a different time. So let's just call them 'the next terrific band'.”
