Superstar singer Madonna allegedly broke into a Lady Gaga verse during a performance in Israel this week – something which has been seen as an attack on the eccentric popstar, who’s often been compared to Madonna throughout her career.
Madge was performing the track ‘Express Yourself’ when she suddenly burst into a rendition of ‘Born This Way’, the title track of Lady Gaga’s latest record. The single has been compared Madonna’s ‘Express Yourself’ countless times by critics – and even Madge herself – and the cover is thought to have been a dig at Gaga.
Interestingly, as soon as she’d finished the cover, Madonna then sang ‘She’s Not Me’ – furthering rumours that Madge isn’t so happy with Gaga and her ever-rising stardom. You can check out a video of the cover below.
Madonna has previously spoken about Gaga and the similarities between their work, with the star saying: “She's a very talented artist. I certainly think she references me a lot in her work. And sometimes I think it's amusing and flattering and well done. [Her songs seem to be a] statement about taking something that was in the zeitgeist, you know, 20 years ago and turning it inside out and reinterpreting it.”
She continued: “When I heard ['Born This Way'] on the radio… I said, 'That sounds very familiar'… It felt reductive. I thought, ‘What a wonderful way to redo my song’. I mean, I recognised the chord changes. I thought it was… interesting.”
Gaga has responded to the claims, too – and claimed: “I will look you in your eyes and tell you that I am not dumb enough or moronic enough to think that you are dumb enough or moronic enough not to see that I would have stolen a melody...If you put the songs next to each other, side by side, the only similarities are the chord progression.”
Both Lady Gaga and Madonna are touring the world this year in support of their respective new albums ‘Born This Way’ and ‘MDNA’. If you need tickets to either of their UK shows, check the dates and details below the video.
