With less than 20 days to go until Europe’s most sought after dance festival begins, another chapter in the life of TomorrowLand is about to begin.
Located in Antwerp, Belgium, TomorrowLand has unofficially cemented its place in the festival calendar as the biggest and most premier electronic festival in Europe.
For anyone who is still unsure and unfamiliar with the festival, it is probably most easily defined as Disney Land on acid, amalgamated with the world’s best disc jockeys.
So much effort and time is put into decoration, the organiser’s state on their tickets that anyone caught defacing or damaging the artwork will simply be ejected from site. And if you are still unable to imagine the aesthetic look of TomorrowLand, YouTube highlights will be more than blow your mind.
Rapidly growing over the last five years, the festival sold 195,000 tickets this year instantaneously with over 2million people from around the world attempting to get their hand on a golden ticket. Ebay currently has weekend tickets on sale for £400+, more than double the face value; the festival is so in demand.
However, enough of the popularity, how about the music; and thankfully, this is where the festival cements its place in electronic folklore.
On the Friday evening, rising star in his genre, Avicii will headline the stage, after Brighton’s very own royalty FatBoy Slim warms the crowd. Both DJ’s have been spinning their decks in England this year, with London 02 Arena and sell-out stadium performances in their bag already respectively. Radio 1 house legend Carl Cox has his very own stage, which he will be headlining after falling in love with the festival last year. He will be supported by one of the finest veterans in the game – Bedrock’s John Digweed. Also on the same evening, trance aficionados will surely indulge in some hand-raising, highly-emotive synths in the Group Therapy stage, as Above and Beyond headline in what is always an incredible set.
As we move onto Saturday, one of the most talked about DJ’s of the moment, Skrillex will warm the crowd for three DJ’s who headlined on Friday last year - The Swedish House Mafia. The trio are in fine form this year although sadly have announced this will be there last year together as a super group before they split back to their individual careers. With last year’s set being one of the most talked about sets at the festival, I am sure the guys will be looking to outdo themselves one last time. Paul van Dyk hosts another stage on Saturday night with support from Marco V and Ferry Corsten.
To end the festival on Sunday, organisers have brought in the world’s number one disc jockey, a man who has just failed to stay out of the charts for the last 18 months and is seemingly producing, mixing or fusing music with what seems like everyone in the industry. Of course we are talking about David Guetta, who is returning to destroy the same stage he did last year. On stage before the superstar DJ is Steve Aoki, whose unique style of electronic house has seen him climb the festival ladder after such memorable moments wrecking the stage mid-afternoon last year with track ‘Warp’. He will also be headlining the Dim Mak Fight Club on Friday night.
There are plenty other artists over the weekend who would conventionally hold down any dance floor, with the likes of Gareth Emery, Laidback Luke, Roger Sanchez, Sander van Doorn, Afrojack, Sven Vath, Jooris Voorn and many more spinning their music over the weekend.
With such an incredible plethora of electronic music on display, TomorrowLand 2012 is sure to be the best electronic festival of the year. For further details visit www.tomorrowland.be.
