Scissor Sisters Perform On New York Rooftop For Paco Rabanne "Black XS Excessive Session"

On 9th July 2012, myself and seven lucky bloggers from Europe and the US had the amazing opportunity to attend one of the most sensational live music events I have ever experienced.

ImageLabelled as the first of Paco Rabanne’s “Black XS Excessive Sessions” (a concept built around Paco Rabanne’s wish to offer exclusive live music alongside the rock 'n' roll glamour of Black XS L’EXCÈS perfumes), the event, which starred none other than the Scissor Sisters, included a meet and greet with the group and took place on a stunning rooftop amongst New York City's West Village skyline.

The extremely intimate rooftop venue was unveiled moments before showtime and minutes after arriving we were presented with the Scissor Sisters performing live on stage – a somewhat surreal experience for a metaller who frequently rotates the likes of AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Motorhead etc.

Performing three songs at the intimate gathering, the Scissor Sisters gave renditions of their “so ghetto” version of Pink Floyd's 'Comfortably Numb' followed by 'Only The Horses' and current single 'Baby Come Home', two new tracks from their current album 'Magic Hour'. The sun began to set, champagne bottles popped and the lights and cameras focussed for the magic on stage.

Following the sensational performance, myself and the others all met the band - Babydaddy (Scott Hoffman), Ana Matronic (Ana Lynch), Jake Shears, Del Marquis (Derek Gruen) - to pose a few select questions.

A group associated with New York City, the Scissor Sisters began by giving us their opinion on the city that birthed them back in 2001. "It's a city where it is not easy to live, it is very hot in summer and very cold winter. Everyone lives on top of one another in boxes.” Ana admitted. “Everyone is here to work, but it is also a place where a very strong common spirit binds people to each other. We're all here for the same reason, to make our lives better. And it's true, if it can be done here it can be done anywhere.”

Hot-on the-heels of the release of single ‘Baby Come Home’, Scissor Sisters recently released an 'instructional video to accompany fan favourite 'Let's Have a Kiki'. Since the release of their album ‘Magic Hour’, ‘Let’s Have a Kiki' has become an anthem amongst a very diverse group of fans. When asked about the term “Kiki”, Ana explained: “It is a term that is used a lot in the group and that comes from the American community of drag queens. It means several things, but mostly have a good time with friends and gossiping. You can have a kiki everywhere. I come from the community "drag" of San Francisco then this song is a tribute to our little world of night."

Following the meet and greet session, the evening's glamorous theme continued with a banquet at New York's Lower East Side 'Beauty and Essex' – definitely an restaurant to check out! Winding down an unforgettable day, we discussed the highlights and tried to bring ourselves back down-to-earth from the aptly named 'Excessive Session'.

Having kicked-off in New York City, two further showcases are scheduled before the end of the year. For further details head to www.be-a-rockstar.com and www.facebook.com/BlackXS for further details. The next “Black XS Excessive Sessions” will take place in European cities, however, here's a little taster of just how things started...Three... Two... One...Go!

The Scissor Sisters' current album ‘Magic Hour’ is the result of a series of team-ups between the band and a whole host of stellar artists, writers and producers, including Azealia Banks, Calvin Harris, Stuart Price, Pharrell Williams, Diplo and Alex Rihda, the German electronic music producer and DJ behind BoysNoize.
