The Menzingers - Everything I Ever Saw (Album Review)

If you’re a person of a certain age, maybe one who can’t drink like they used to, or who’s noticed a favourite band T-shirt they have lived in for years feeling a little tight, The Menzingers are a beautiful thing. The Philly indie-punks have a unique voice when it comes to romanticising life’s messy car crashes and on ‘Everything I Ever Saw’ the flames of the collisions still linger, but they take comfort in sitting by their warm glow.
Opener Chance Encounters feels like dropping the walls with an old friend and hearing the exact words you needed to hear in return. Meanwhile, tracks such as Gasoline & Matches and Nobody’s Heroes push the listener to put down whatever weight they’re carrying just for the moment, rejecting perfectionism in a world that has no space for it.
And, while earlier albums harnessed the rage and angst that comes with turmoil, ‘Everything I Ever Saw’ reflects that sense of acceptance.
The band have punchier songs in their discography and only a few moments here hit with the ferocity of old stagers Good Things or I Don’t Wanna Be An Asshole Anymore.
By shooting for similar tones with each track they risk them blurring into one, but these songs are going to be welcome additions to the setlist, adding a sombre-yet-essential tonal shift.
The catch-22 facing a lot of punk bands is that they stay stuck in the past. But, while it's true that The Menzingers never stray too far from the path instrumentally, they continue to evolve and become wiser with every album. It’s not wisdom beyond their years, but wisdom for today. Talk to your friends.
