It’s hard to summarise a record as complex as this in a few hundred words, which only underlines the most enticing thing about Maria BC’s music: their ability to harness the messy strands of soul and conscience and channel them into a hypnotic storyline.

‘Marathon’ is a spellbinding record, the Ohio-based songwriter dives deeper than ever before, daring the listener to submerge themselves in an intense narrative over the course of 13 harrowingly beautiful tracks.

‘Marathon’ unfolds like a poetry anthology and as Maria BC tackles themes of resistance, environmental ruin, and destruction, the sonic landscape cascades and dances, with soul rattling distortion, subdued acoustics and jarring, stabbing electronic effects employed in an enigmatic sound experiment that complements

The daring choice to colour the space with field recordings, with sounds from nature and creaking homes interspersed throughout, injects a gothic element into the already melancholy atmosphere. While you feel comfortable exploring their stories and picking from the fruits on offer, Maria BC demands every ounce of your emotional attention and availability across all songs.

Album highlight Sabotage encapsulates the heartbreak and warping of the soul that comes with insomnia and this intensity flows continuously across the record regardless of the story beats elsewhere.

There is a tension between form and meaning that looms over the album, with gut-wrenching lyrical hopelessness presented in a warm glow of nostalgia. You’d be forgiven if you only listened to this album once. It will squeeze every ounce of emotion from your heart. But, rest assured, the impact of ‘Marathon’ will linger for much longer.
