You can’t really fault Foo Fighters. When they’re good, they’re great. Even when they’re bad, they’re still pretty good. ‘Your Favorite Toy’ delivers everything you could want from Dave Grohl and the gang and, for better and worse, it sounds like every other Foo Fighters record so far. But even if the days when we might expect them to make another Everlong have long passed, at times this all feels a little too safe, too familiar, and a tiny bit rudderless.
The title track is emblematic of their approach, harnessing the blistering punk rock attitude that drives the majority of the album, which also starts off with a mosh-worthy anthem in Caught in The Echo, serving up traditional Grohl screams and a juggernaut chorus ready to rattle the foundations of stadiums across the world.
Closer Asking For A Friend is another thumping anthem, with a chaotic riff ushering the most epic kind of rock ‘n’ roll tempest.
But, when push comes to shove, even these standouts would fall short of the podium when it comes to Foo Fighters’ greatest hits. The rest lack similar purpose, while any songs that do have depths to explore are let down by lacklustre compositions.
Take Of All People. The song is about Grohl bumping into a drug dealer he knew back in the day and wondering why, out of everyone he knows and with all he’s lost, this guy is still standing. This is deep, meaningful and contemplative, but the track is bog-standard rock, its intense subject matter wasted on a generic chord progression.
It’s frustrating as Grohl is never usually one to lack inspiration, and he’s been through the wringer of late. But with no edge or sense of risk to separate it from the rest of their discography, ‘Your Favorite Toy’ feels doomed to be forgotten in short order.
