On ‘Everybody Scream’, it feels like Florence Welch has become more myth than person, more folk goddess than a singer in a timeless band. Boasting an enchanting theme tightly woven like medieval tapestry, here Florence walks candlelit corridors while reciting a soul-bearing odyssey. The record’s Halloween release date is surely no coincidence as the band gleefully leans into imagery of witches and sorcery, perhaps inspiring the formation of a coven or two.
While self-destruction and tumultuous relationships are hardly unfamiliar pastures, there has always been an intentional seam of hope illuminating the lyrics on past records. But at times here Florence wholly embraces the darkness as she wrestles with the tangled vines of a gothic landscape, and the richness of ‘Everybody Scream’ comes from this dynamic contrast.
The customary soul-ascending ballads and delicate harps are scattered throughout the record, while Sympathy Magic might be the most spellbinding song in a catalogue already containing Dog Days Are Over and Shake It Out.
Music By Men is a beautiful track dedicated to the dying flames of a relationship, while on Buckle she dissects complex themes of emotional vulnerability. If you dare to pull aside the gothic veil, you’ll find Florence staring bac, as direct and candid as she has ever been.
Which leads us to the enigmatic title track, where Florence chooses not to shun despair and anger. Instead, she encourages the listener to embrace the chaos and dance within its fury. She harnesses the power that lies within melancholy and finds fresh ways to evolve her sound all over again. Everybody scream, everybody dance. Enough said.
