Marina And The Diamonds Star Was Afraid Fans Wouldn't Accept New Musical Direction Of Latest Record

Welsh pop singer-songwriter Marina and the Diamonds has confessed that she was afraid that people wouldn’t accept the change of style she brought with her second album ‘Electra Heart’ - and worried that she wouldn’t be ‘allowed’ to become the pop star she is today.

Marina’s first album ‘The Family Jewels’ - which hit #5 in the UK Albums chart - was a more indie and new-wave influenced album, while her second effort ‘Electra Heart’ (which topped the chart earlier this year) saw her taking on a more pop-like sound. Though she found success across the globe, the 27 year-old singer admits that she was afraid people wouldn’t welcome her new sound.

Speaking to Drowned in Sound, Marina revealed: “I think that I wasn't allowed to change and that deep down I wanted to write a pop album and to be a popstar. For some reason, I felt like people wouldn't allow me to do that, which is stupid because I love the album.

“So I should have just never said anything and accepted that some people would have said 'she's not credible anymore' and that some people would start to be a fan of me, because that's what always happens when you change your music.”

If you were someone who embraced Marina’s new musical direction, you’ll be happy to know she’s performing in the UK and Ireland in the next weeks, with her next gig set to take place in Bristol tomorrow. Check below to find tickets through Stereoboard.
