A lawsuit filed by Pandora against the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) - which would see artists’ royalty figures reduced - has been dealt a blow after a 125-strong list of musicians and singers hit out at it in an open letter, claiming that it is ‘not fair’.
The letter was originally written by SoundExchange and musicFirst Coalition, and asks Pandora why it feels the need to ‘gut he royalties that thousands of musicians rely upon’, also adding that that’s ‘not how partners work together’ - alluding to the discounted rates they have supplied Pandora with over the years. It’s since been backed by over 100 famous musicians including Rihanna, Britney Spears, and Pink Floyd.
The letter reads: “We are big fans of Pandora. That’s why we helped give the company a discount on rates for the past decade. Pandora is now enjoying phenomenal success as a Wall Street company. Skyrocketing growth in revenues and users. We celebrate that. At the same time, the music community is just now beginning to gain its footing in this new digital world.
“Pandora’s principal asset is the music. Why is the company asking Congress once again to step in and gut the royalties that thousands of musicians rely upon? That’s not fair and that’s not how partners work together. Congress has many pressing issues to consider, but this is not one of them. Let’s work this out as partners and continue to bring fans the great musical experience they rightly expect.”
Also on the support list is Bryan Adams, Sheryl Crow, John Paul Jones, Frankie Valli, Robert Plant, Primus, Roger Waters, and Cee Lo Green. You can check out the actual letter here.
What do you think of the lawsuit - do artists make more than enough money with royalties, or would a cut be unfair? Let us know in the comment section below.
