Fleetwood Mac Star Stevie Nicks: 'I Almost Died After Rehab Stint

Stevie Nicks, star of British-American rockers Fleetwood Mac, has opened up about her stint in rehab, revealing that it almost killed her.

Nicks entered rehab in 1993 to help deal with her addiction to Klonopin, and returned just 47 days later completely clean. Though she managed to kick her addiction, withdrawals from such drugs can have extremely adverse affects on the body, and Nicks has claimed that the stint almost left her for dead.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Nicks explained: “I went into rehab on December 12, 1993 and came out on January 27 - 47 days to come off Klonopin. I nearly died. And I think one of the reasons that Lindsey left is because I was very, very high on this horrific tranquiliser. I didn't even make it to most of the recording sessions for Tango In The Night. I was sick. And I think he was horribly worried that I was going to die.”

Guitarist Lindsey Buckingham continued on to talk about how drugs and partying lead to him leaving the band, and said: “I quit because things were getting a little too crazy, and I wanted to try to get my feet back on the ground. I think by the time you cut to '96, when we contemplated doing 'The Dance', there had been enough time where we all settled down as people. The craziness that existed in '87 and '88 was gone. We were – for all intents and purposes – adults. I think the time apart helped us appreciate each other.”

Despite the problems and splits along the way, the band are back to tour the world again this year in celebration of the 35th anniversary of their seminal album ‘Rumours’. They hit the UK later this year - dates haven’t yet been revealed but they’re expected here around autumn time.
