Stereoboard's February Playlist Feat. Cut Ribbons, Nick Cave, Lordi, Bastille & More - Listen Now

Thursday, 28 February 2013 Written by Heather McDaid

It's difficult to believe the amount of quality music that comes out month after month. January was brimming with brilliance in the form of musical releases, and February had a high bar to contend with.

Luckily, there was plenty of quality to choose from this month; even luckier, there wasn't an abundance of soppy Valentines tracks to coincide with the occasion - phew! We at Stereoboard picked our favourite tracks of the month for your enjoyment, so have a look and listen through our playlist for February. Perhaps you'll find a new favourite band!

Bastille - 'Pompeii' from the album 'Bad Blood'
Suggested by Katie Territt.

I love that it has that distinctive Bastille sound with Dan Smith’s gorgeously smooth vocals, but the music is a slightly heavier, almost electronic sound to what they’ve released previously. Cannot wait for the album!

Cut Ribbons - 'Luna'
Suggested by David Ball.

Llanelli's Cut Ribbons are set to continue Wales' strong reputation for producing high quality indie pop with Luna their latest single. Having spent last year on the road honing their dual vocal sound supporting the likes of Dry The River and Joy Formidable they're on the verge of making the big time themselves as their ever growing fan base will attest. 'Luna' builds slowly showing off their vocal talents before opening out into 4 minutes of catchy, guitar driven joy. The attached video shows them performing at last year's Reading festival, Luna is the second track (Damascus, the first was their previous single and is equally brilliant). Listen here.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - 'Jubilee Street' from the album 'Push The Sky Away'
Suggested by Ben Bland.

Cave's mastery of the poetry of despair shows no sign of fading, as this highlight from the fifteenth Bad Seeds record proves. Musically a work of sparse delicacy, this track alone demonstrates why Cave and his co-conspirators remain utterly indispensable.

Lordi - 'The Riff' from the album 'To Beast or Not to Beast'
Suggested by Alec Chillingworth.

The undisputed kings of European cheese return (main pic), attacking the ears with a sharp, steaming-hot slab of unashamedly pompous metal. The best thing they've released in years.

Foals - 'My Number' from the album 'Holy Fire'
Suggested by Jonny Rimmer.

Their most accessible track yet from their most mature album yet. With its jittery guitar melody and impeccably precise groove, Foals continue to churn out fantastic off-beat pop songs.

The Virginmarys - 'Just A Ride' from the album 'King Of Conflict'
Suggested by Anna Ghislena.

A breathtaking smacker of a song taken from the debut album "King of Conflict", it is a suffocating break-up anthem storming with grungy riffs and rollercoasting harmonies. (Remember to breathe throughout!)

Gary Clark Junior - 'Third Stone From The Sun/If You Love Me Like You Say' from the album 'Blak And Blu'
Suggested by Simon Ramsay.

It's a near-ten-minute show stopping mash up of Hendrix's classic riff with Little Johnny Taylor's blues boogie, Indian tabla drums, turntable scratching and fret melting guitar pyrotechnics. What's not to love? Listen here.

Godsized - 'Heavy Load' from the album 'Time'
Suggested by Jon Stickler.

Available now as free download, the big-riffed, hook-driven 'Heavy Load' is taken from Godsized anticipated album 'Time' which will be released in April. Oozing southern groove and two beefy solos, this taster has left me even more excited about what the UK southern-rockers have in store come April. Listen here.

The Bronx - 'Torches' from the album 'IV'
Suggested by Heather McDaid.

Almost half a decade of waiting can prove anticlimactic when bands don't live up to their own hype. Luckily, The Bronx did just that with their fourth eponymous album; in amidst the quality-packed punk onslaught lays this beaut. It might strike a calmer chord with Weezer's 'My Name Is Jonas', but in an otherwise aggressive and loud record, this still holds its own. A welcome return.

Rewind - 'Talk No More' from the album 'The Flavours Vol. 5'
Suggested by Elliott Batte.

When anything from Playaz lands in my inbox, I always know there's something epic in store for my poor little ears. With 'The Flavours Vol. 5' I wasn't disappointed, and I was blown away by Rewind's 'Talk No More'. It's shuffle-y, rolling percussion is accompanied by one of the sweetest basslines you'll hear this year – Rewind has properly utilised the future-jungle-style bassline we heard in Wickaman, Hoodlum & Mavrik's 'One Scratch', and he's created a dancefloor destroyer! Listen here..

Well, March. It's over to you.
