Twitter Unveil New Music Service ’Twitter #music’

Thursday, 18 April 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

Twitter are launching a brand new music service - dubbed Twitter #music - today, that claims will ‘change the way people find new music’.

Using Twitter activity, tweets, follows, and shares, the new service finds the most popular tracks of the moment - whether they’re from unheard of artists, megastars, or emerging bands - and lists them on a trend page, where you can listen to them.

It also brings artists’ music-related Twitter activity front and centre - you can go to their profiles to see which music artists they follow, and listen to songs by those artists. And, of course, you can tweet songs right from the app.

The app currently uses iTunes, Spotify, and Rdio to supply it’s music - iTunes will give you a standard preview of any track you select on the app (assuming it’s listed in iTunes), while Spotify and Rdio users who log in will be able to hear the track in full - again, assuming they’re listed.

Twitter have also promised that they’re looking at even more music providers to involve with the app, meaning their already-available library will be expanded even further.

This new app means you have a whole world of music at your fingertips - if you’re scrolling through a chart and you want to learn more about an artist such as Jake Bugg, for example, you can tap his avatar to see his top song, follow him right from the chart, or tap his Twitter username to go to their profile.

Or, if you wanted to listen to music from the artists Kendrick Lamar follows, you can search for his name using the search icon in the top right corner. Then tap one of the artists you’re interested in and hit the play button to begin listening, or press play on the player to listen to all the artists.

Twitter gave a number of their favourite artists a sneak preview of the app - check out some of the responses they’ve received below!
