Arctic Monkeys More Prepared For Glasto This Time Around, Says Alex Turner

Wednesday, 26 June 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

Arctic Monkeys main man Alex Turner has opened up about the band’s upcoming headline slot at Glastonbury - referring to the festival as an ‘old wise wizard’.

The singer and guitarist headlined the festival with his band back in 2007, although he confessed that he ‘didn’t really know what it was’ back then - and compared performing there to ‘playing on the moon’.

But now, having attended every festival since then, he’s come to appreciate its vibe - something he hopes will make Arctic Monkeys’ set even better. Speaking to BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe, Turner explained:

“It’s kind of like an other-worldy quality that Glastonbury festival has, that can’t be explained, to someone that hasn’t experienced the thing. At that time when we last played it, I’d never been there before, I didn’t really know what it was, you know, and now I think I’ve been like every year it’s been on since then, and somehow I feel that makes me better equipped to play it this time, and all others really.”

He continued:

“Glastonbury is like this old wise wizard, or something, kind of controls the tides of the rock ‘n roll universe, and I perhaps understand that a little better this time, I’ve got a respect for it, you know. Maybe that wise wizard’s got a respect for us now, don’t know. Hopefully he’ll turn the speakers on or whatever, turn us up a bit this time.”

The band announced brand new album ‘AM’ earlier this week, and headline Glastonbury this Friday (June 28).
