Is there always something lurking behind a picket fence? If you're in leafy Guildford, then it might be Miss Vincent, a new four-piece who take their cues from Misfits, Alkaline Trio and other fine purveyors of schlock-fuelled pop-punk.
The band released their debut EP, 'Creepy', on September 2, having spent the last year or so touring hard and honing their sound.
“We went on tour before we released our first single, that was the main goal for me,” frontman Alex Marshall said. “Don't fuck about trying to get online fans and doing stupid Facebook stuff, just get out in people's faces because that's the only way you're going to properly improve as a band.
“You literally have to stand in front of them and play them your music, so you can see the look on their face. It was so helpful for us to do that because we saw what worked, we saw what didn't work and we saw what other bands were doing as well. Touring songs and playing them for ages before we recorded them was so important because when we went in the studio everything just clicked.”
Miss Vincent recorded 'Creepy' with another luminary from the area's burgeoning scene, Daly George of Drones, who provided a fresh set of ears and a few effective ideas as the band rolled their road-tested tunes into the studio.
“We thought everything was set and that we were just going to go in there and record, because we knew the songs so well they tracked themselves real quick,” Marshall said. “Daly had so many cool ideas and so much flair for the songs, it was amazing working with him. There were so many little ideas that he came up with, not huge changes to the songs, but things that had an impact and an effect on us.
“Daly is literally from just up the road from me. I was a fan of Drones from before we even started playing shows. He's from the same scene as us, he gets it. It's nice to be able to support other local punk musicians doing what they love. We had a fucking wicked time in the studio.”
Like the songs themselves, Miss Vincent took some time to come together, with Marshall building up a collection of tracks before the band found a settled lineup and nailed their colours to the mast.
“I've always been into Misfits, Alkaline Trio, AFI, punk bands who have this dark side,” Marshall said. “That b-movie, horror thing going on. I played in a bunch of bands for many years and decided on this sound because it's just the one I was drawn to. I had 25-30 songs written before we started.
“The songs just seemed to go in that direction. I don't think we sound too much like any of our influences, it was just something that I was really drawn to. It just worked. There are so many pop-punk bands out there doing the melodic hardcore thing, but you don't want to follow the crowd.”
