Beats Working: The Summer's Best Drum And Bass Picks

Tuesday, 10 September 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

Dance music never really went away, but it seems that in recent times it's risen even further through the ranks, commanding arenas where it used to lay claim to dancefloors. We've welcomed a variety of new genres into the spotlight, we've seen a reemergence of house music and the birth of dubstep, but this month what we really love is a bit of good ol' drum and bass.

Luckily for us we've been dining on a steady diet of delicious beats in recent weeks, keeping us one step ahead of what’s up and coming in the scene, and what’s going to be getting rinsed and rewound over the coming months. In the first edition of a new regular feature, we've put together a storming Top Five of the best new tunes, which you might just want to grab for your record bag, laptop, CD collection, or school disco.

On top of our list is James Ellaway, a.k.a Lung. The Welsh DJ is one of many creative geniuses signed to the Hospital Records/Med School team, and is set to release his debut album 'Wait Less Suspense' on September 16.

Fourteen tracks strong, it features a load of epic and diverse drum and bass, as well as a few dubstep, garage, and house-style tunes too - proving he’s got skills across the board. We seriously recommend grabbing this LP - you can pre-order it here.

We’ve also got a lot of time for IM:LTD’s 'Magnetron' EP. The French label releases tracks from artists scattered across Europe and the UK, and their latest six-track collection is one of their best.

Though a predominantly dark and industrial release, it’s got something for every drum and bass lover out there. There are serious neuro flavours with Andy Pain & Z Connection’s title track, a feet-shifting roller from Decontrol & Twisted Facts, Hibea’s half-time head-nodder, Bond, a stripped back steppa in Fade’s Laid Bare and even some funk from Alpan Aytekin. Out on September 30, you’ll be able to grab it here and can check out a few previews below.

Next up is the Sine Language album on Teebee’s mighty Subtitles label. Out on September 23, it’s got a massive 25 tracks and is set to be one of the biggest neurofunk long-players of the year. As soon as we got this one, it was on constant repeat and we’re sure the same will go for anyone who bags it, either as a full digital release or on the four-disc vinyl collection.

Inside the ride there’s a plethora of expertly-produced powerhouses. Ulterior Motive have outdone themselves twice, with Gang Rule and their remix of Chrisp’s Hound, while Break delivers a slice of his raw style with End of Time. There’s even some liquid from Seba and Chris SU, and there’s some sweet new remasters of classic Teebee tracks Let Go and Human Reptile. The pick of the bunch, though, is Brain Crisis’ Fight Ogres, which is downright ridiculous. Pre-order it here.

London man Xtrah has been making waves with his forthcoming EP 'Lost Time'. Out later this month via Break’s Symmetry Recordings, it’s got four bumper tracks and sees the label head providing an insane remix of Cyrax.

A typically techy EP from the 25-year-old, it also features an evil bouncer in Groove Shadow and a naughty, bass-heavy half-time beat with Always New (featuring Break and DRS), but fans will probably looking forward to the title track the most. A meaty roller featuring Codebreaker, it combines eerie synths, classic neuro bass and a simple vocal. The previews are below - get on it.

Lastly, we have 'The Flavours Volume 6', the latest installment in the ever-popular Flavours series on DJ Hype and Pascal’s Playaz Recordings. As usual - and as the title suggests - there are a variety of flavours over the eight tracks, and it touches on some corners that are a little unfamiliar to the label’s typical territory. It’s worked extremely well.

Survival’s amen-filled Didgy, Nerve’s monster Magic Medicine, and Incognito's industrial runner are favourites, while Jaydan goes all Lenzman on us for She’s Heaven. And don’t worry jump-up lovers, Dialogue and Liondub have a healthy supply of Reese. This actually hit shelves on Monday - click here to buy!

As you can tell, there’s an amazing amount of material for drum and bass lovers worldwide to get this side of the summer, even for those with the most picky of tastes. If you like any of the stuff you’re hearing, make sure you buy and support the artists - and get yourself out to some drum and bass nights too.
