Music magazine NME will be trialling a brand new payment scheme on its website, which will allow online users to read its magazine’s featured articles for a charge.
The long-running website, which is the world’s biggest standalone music site having amassed seven million users a month, has never charged its readers to access its content but the new plans will see it carrying NME Magazine’s cover feature from Wednesday September 25, available only to paying customers.
The site’s normal content will remain free to access, but a number of ‘extras’ will be made available to those who splash the cash. As it stands, the new scheme is only set to act as a water-tester from publishing company IPC, but could potentially become a full-time feature of the website.
The website for tabloid paper The Sun recently introduced a similar scheme, which sees customers paying to read full articles. However, this has led to a drop in the website’s users, but with NME Magazine itself seeing a drop in circulation, the move could possibly work out in their favour.
