Arctic Monkeys' Matt Helders: Drunken Wall Punch Behind Broken Hand

Friday, 27 September 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

Matt Helders, drummer of Sheffield rock titans Arctic Monkeys, has revealed that his absence from some of the band’s recording sessions for latest record ‘AM’ was caused by a broken hand sustained after he drunkenly punched a wall.

The band were forced to enlist the help of Pete Thomas (from Elvis Costello’s backing band The Attractions) as cover while Helders recovered, with the record going on to top the album charts and secure a nomination for the Mercury Prize.

In an interview with Q Magazine, the drummer has revealed that a metal plate was inserted into his hand following the incident:

“It wasn't a fist fight with a person, no. I didn't hurt anybody, except for myself. It was a bizarre incident... with a wall... that was harder than I expected. The next day I did (feel like a fool). It was just me being stupid.

“I weren't even that angry, cos I'm not an angry person. I was just messing about, drunk. Everyone I've told said, 'We've all done it.' I just managed to hit the wrong wall. The bone popped out - not out of the skin but it was stuck up. I went to my girlfriend, 'I think we need to go to hospital.' They put a plate in it. I'm having it taken out at Christmas.”

Luckily, Helders is also back behind the kit and will perform with the band on their upcoming UK tour in October and November. If you’re a fan and want to catch them live, check the dates and links below!
