New Noise: The From Now On Festival Setlist

Wednesday, 12 February 2014 Written by Huw Baines

What we traditionally describe as ‘festival season’ - read wellies and people saying words like ‘transcendental’ about Glastonbury sets - is still a good few months down the road, presumably nestled behind more wind and rain.

But, thanks to the folks at Shape Records, Cardiff’s Chapter Arts Centre will get in on the act early by hosting the first edition of From Now On between February 14 and 15. Featuring an eclectic bill, one that includes harp manipulation and bedroom alt-pop in equal measure, it promises to be something of a treasure trove for music fans with broad horizons.

To check out the line up and procure tickets, you can head to the festival’s website, or, alternatively, dive in below for our pick of a few sets not to be missed during the weekend.

Euros Childs

Childs, formerly of Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, has enjoyed a tremendous run in recent years, turning out a string of endearing, lopsided pop records on his own National Elf label. He’ll play a solo piano set at From Now On, where his knack for uncovering pleasing left-field melodies will be thrown under the spotlight.

Trust Fund

Coming to you straight from the bedroom of Bristol’s Ellis Jones, Trust Fund’s recent EP, ‘Don’t Let Them Begin’ is packed full of fuzzy pop treats and delivered with a healthy dose of Mountain Goats-style tape hiss. They might be rough around the edges, but some of the record’s melodies are pretty special.

Tender Prey

Laura Bryon’s latest project, Tender Prey offer plenty of reverb and a dangerous, interesting new take on the blues. If you intend on having a switchblade fight during the course of the weekend, wait for her set to start to ensure the correct musical accompaniment.

Gwenno

From Now On offers a fine opportunity to catch new material from Gwenno Saunders, formerly of the Pipettes. With a full-length record on the horizon, so far we have been treated to a couple of grabs of ethereal pop in the form of the meandering Chwyldro and Golau Arall singles.

R. Seiliog

Robin Edwards’ ‘Doppler’ EP, released by Turnstile last autumn, sketched out another route into his circular, hypnotic electro noise. Having shared stages with some of the leading lights in Welsh music - including Cate Le Bon and Gruff Rhys - his live show, alongside a fleshed-out band, offers a whole new take on the material.
