Thursday, 13 March 2014 Written by Huw Baines

Two people have been killed and 23 injured in a car accident at SXSW in Austin, Texas.

The Associated Press reports that a car crashed through a barricade erected for the festival at 12.30am local time, with its driver fleeing from police. He was subsequently apprehended by an officer with a taser after attempting to escape the scene on foot.

Fans had been queuing outside the city's Mohawk Club for a show by rapper Tyler, The Creator. The deceased, a man and a woman, were riding a moped when struck by the car.

The Austin Police Department confirmed in a tweet: "Individual is in custody. More details shortly. The names of the deceased will not be released until proper notifications have been made."

The department's chief, Art Acevedo, said: "We owe it to the victims and their families to gather the evidence we need to bring them justice."
