Freschard - Major Tom's Social Club, Harrogate - August 19 2014 (Live Review)

Wednesday, 20 August 2014 Written by Maisy Ash

This gig can be summed up by Clémence Freschard’s choice of stage attire: an oversized green jumper. During her set, as part of a tour with long-time collaborator Stanley Brinks, her laid back vocals and unassuming stage presence are complemented by that jumper; she is casual, warm and comfortable. But, that is not to say it’s everyday or lazy. Freschard’s a real French fancy.

Though there is only a small crowd gathered at Major Tom’s Social Club, it makes for an intimate and friendly atmosphere, even if one fears people are missing out on an unexpected treat.

The venue is relaxed and trendy, without being too self aware, while Freschard half speaks, half sings her tales of everyday moments and surreal imagery with a look of pure joy on her face. At one point, she confesses that she is unsure of which song to sing next. A voice from the crowd responds: “Cheese and Crackers”.

Taken from her ‘Boom Biddy Boom’ collection, it is in fact slightly crackers, but even this lactose intolerant writer can enjoy its beautiful, cheerful simplicity. Freschard possesses a lovely voice and the words ‘double whammy’ sound far better in a French accent. Objectively, they do.

The wistful Who The World Belongs To is a standout, its chorus almost a water colour painted with words, and Freschard sounds like she could soon feature on a Wes Anderson soundtrack, underscoring scenes of longing and contemplation. She has decided, after living in Paris and New York, to settle in Berlin and that culturally aware, contemporary and alternative city seems a good fit for her creatively. Here’s to her next move.
