Bonobo - Migration (Album Review)

Thursday, 19 January 2017 Written by Milly McMahon

Bonobo’s sixth studio album, ‘Migration’, is a truly existential experience where a melodic fusion of sounds - including flecks of soul, tribal beats and orchestral crescendos - links each track. It conjures emotions ranging from melancholia to euphoria and is the result of Simon Green challenging himself to write his most human record to date.

Choosing to step back from his well honed aesthetic, ‘Migration’ anchors Bonobo’s sound to more experimental electronics. Opening with the title track, the record benefits from its ability to create a soaring sense of anticipation. Green sonically reconstructs natural places of beauty and represents cityscapes that have inspired him, forging a profound, almost out of body, experience to powerful effect.

The standout No Reason features Nick Murphy (the artist formerly known as Chet Faker) and spirals like a lamenting love song, communicating desire and loss as though they were intrinsically linked.

Break Apart, a collaboration with Rhye that was released at the end of last year, details beautifully poetic sentiments and illustrates faded love. Both display the fragility and natural sense of emotional vulnerability that resonates throughout ‘Migration’.

Second Sun, meanwhile, is truly spellbinding. Originally conceived in 2009, during the time of the outstanding 'Black Sand' album, it was left on the shelf when Green moved on from the unfinished instrumental unsure of how to further evolve its delicately introspective lullaby.

The strings that now forge its chorus move with exquisite elegance and demonstrate the touch of a composer who intuitively understands the deep impact music can have upon a listener.

Bonobo is extending his music’s reach to new, unprecedented levels. What started as a career as a basement DJ and bedroom producer has bloomed into a bountiful exploration of ambitious audio visual realms on ‘Migraton’.
