Can drummer Jaki Liebezeit has died aged 78.

The founding member of the German experimental band passed away early this morning from pneumonia. A statement was posted to the band's Facebook page confirming the news.

Liebezeit was born on May 26, 1938 and started off his musical career as part of Manfred Schoof's quintet in the late '60s before going on to form Can in 1968. During his career he collaborated with musicians such as Michael Rother, Jah Wobble and Philip Jeck. He also formed the drum ensembles Drums off Chaos and Club off Chaos, as well as guesting on numerous records, including Depeche Mode's 'Ultra' and Brian Eno's 'Before and After Science'.

Since the announcement of his death tributes have begun to appear online from those he worked with in the musical community.
