Grant Hart, drummer and co-leader of punk legends Hüsker Dü, has died aged 56.

Hart had been living with cancer for some time. His death was first reported by Variety and confirmed by his former bandmate Bob Mould, with whom he dovetailed as co-songwriter and vocalist of Hüsker Dü.

“The tragic news of Grant’s passing was not unexpected to me,” Mould said in a statement, which you can read in full below. “My deepest condolences and thoughts to Grant’s family, friends, and fans around the world.

“Grant Hart was a gifted visual artist, a wonderful story teller, and a frighteningly talented musician. Everyone touched by his spirit will always remember. Godspeed, Grant. I miss you. Be with the angels.”

Hart formed Hüsker Dü with Mould and bassist Greg Norton in Saint Paul, Minnesota, in 1979. Their hugely influential sound traversed hardcore punk and later alt-rock, turning out classic LPs including ‘Zen Arcade’, ‘New Day Rising’ and ‘Candy Apple Grey’.

He also played with Nova Mob and embarked on a solo career, with his most recent release, ‘The Argument’, arriving in 2013. ‘Savage Young Dü’, a retrospective release covering Hüsker Dü’s early years, is out on November 10.
