We Got You Babe: The History Of Cher

Thursday, 17 January 2019 Written by Helen Payne

What a world we’d live in if everyone was as amazing as Cher. With a six-decade strong career tucked firmly under her sparkly belt, she truly is one of those pop icons we love to love. The singer has continually reinvented herself - from the hippy early days of the 1960s to her most recent emergence in the Mamma Mia! sequel, Here We Go Again. She has done it all, seen it all and worn it all.

To coincide with the film’s release, last year the superstar released an album of Abba covers, ‘Dancing Queen’. She’ll support the record with a huge tour of the UK and Ireland in October 2019, touching down in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Leeds and Dublin. Due to spectacular demand for tickets, extra dates have already been announced, so get yours quickly before they sell out!

Ahead the shows, reacquaint yourself with some of that quintessential Cher.

Sonny and Cher

Let’s start at the beginning. Back in the ‘60s life was different. Life was simpler. Pop singers wore cowboy outfits, flares and silly amounts of fringe, and no one batted an eyelid. Cher donned all regularly as one half of the folk-pop husband and wife duo Sonny and Cher. Their 1965 hit single I Got You Babe hit number one in the UK, Canada and US, where it was certified gold.

After that there was no stopping them. The ‘70s saw the pair release numerous albums together and they even went on to have their own television shows, The Sonny & Cher Show and The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour. Both received Emmy nominations and their success was only outdone by the duo’s record sales, which totalled 40 million worldwide in their 10 years together - they divorced in 1975.

If I Could Turn Back Time

Her success with Sonny saw the singer catapulted into the limelight. She became increasingly popular as a solo artist, releasing more than twenty albums under her own steam over the course of her career.

It was in the 1980s, though, that she truly came into her own. She soared through the decade with  — if you can believe it — even more glitz and glam than yesteryear’s paisley and bell-bottoms. She also made sure to finish it off in style - dressed in leather and straddling a canon to the tune of the all out 1989 ‘Heart Of Stone’ smash If I Could Turn Back Time - complete with power synths, a catchy chorus and that inevitable key change. Love. It.

Acting Ambitions

Not complete with world domination in the music industry, Cher also had ambitions as an actress. Despite believing the Academy didn’t take her seriously at the 1986 Oscars - and ruffling feathers with her out-there choice of outfit as a sassy reaction - she won the Best Actress award for her role in Moonstruck in 1988. Widely regarded as her most successful film, it pushed Cher even further up the stardom ladder.

Her next movie - 1990s Mermaids featuring Bob Hoskins, Winona Ryder and Christina Ricci- merged the best of both her worlds, bringing together her acting talent with her incredible voice. While the film received mixed reviews, the song recorded for the soundtrack, The Shoop Shoop Song (It’s In His Kiss) was a huge success, topping the UK singles chart.

Do You Believe In A Comeback?

Cher spent the early to mid-’90s in a bit of a rut. Due to the success of Moonstruck, she was said to be overly cautious about her next career move. But you can’t keep a good woman down and by 1998 she’d returned with new single Believe, which earned her the best-selling single of all time by a female artist in the UK at the time. It was her commercial peak, and had major dance club vibes. As per usual, she was ahead of her time, using an auto-tuner similar to that of the current chart-topping trap and Soundcloud rap artists.

Here We Go Again

Similar to combining a hit song with her acting in Mermaids, Cher took it one step further in 2018 and recorded an entire album of Abba covers to go hand in hand with her role in the Mamma Mia! sequel. A pop sensation singing sensational pop songs, it was awesome.‘Nuff said.

So, as we look ahead to her upcoming Here We Go Again Tour, what songs can we expect Cher to perform? Well, as the record’s title suggests, it’s likely she’ll take on the role of dancing royalty, along with possibly a shimmy to Gimme Gimme Gimme, a nod to Fernando, a shoop-shoop to Super Trouper, and of course, the classic Mamma Mia!, as well as those timeless hits from her prolific career. She is the winner, and she’s taking it all.
