Phoebe Bridgers Releases Critical Christmas Single 7 O'Clock News/Silent Night

Friday, 13 December 2019 Written by Helen Payne

Phoebe Bridgers has released a Christmas single.

Unlike your usual cheery festive classic, Bridgers’ take on Silent Night criticises society and politics in America by overlaying a news bulletin on the sweetly sung carol. The National frontman and previous collaborator Matt Berninger plays the role of newscaster, while additional vocals come from Fiona Apple.

All profits from the single will go to Planned Parenthood. Bridgers said of the track:

“Happy Holidays to everyone whose family has been literally or figuratively torn apart by Donald Trump. And to my racist, xenophobic, misogynistic, hypocritical family members, fuck you. Thanks Fiona, Matt, Simon, and Garfunkel.”

Bridgers put out ‘Better Oblivion Community Centre’, a joint album with Conor Oberst, earlier this year, and has support slots lined up with the National on their I Am Easy To Find World Tour in Japan, Australia and New Zealand in 2020. She’ll also play Shaky Knees Festival in Atlanta, GA, and Madrid’s Mad Cool Festival.
