Little Richard has died aged aged 87.

The news of the musical icon's passing was announced to Rolling Stone by his son Danny Jones Penniman, who also confirmed that currently the cause of his father's death is unknown.

Born Richard Wayne Penniman on December 5, 1932 in Macon, Georgia, Richard is credited as one of the pioneers of rock and roll, as well as influencing genres that followed, including funk, hip hop and the evolution of R&B. He is well known for his dynamic voice and flamboyant style, which he emanated through his spirited performances and bold fashion choices.

1955's Tuttie Frutti and the following year's Long Tall Solly garnered the performer mainstream success in the US and UK, following which he released his debut album, 'Here's Little Richard', in 1957. He went on to tour the world, joining the likes of the Rollings Stones and the Everly Brothers on the road.

Little Richard is an inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as well as the Songwriters Hall of Fame, has released over 20 albums across six decades, and influenced a number of musical superstars, including Elton John and Paul McCartney.
