Disclosure - ENERGY (Album Review)

Tuesday, 15 September 2020 Written by Milly McMahon

Cooking up a delectable platter of sounds, Disclosure are back with their most cogent, quietly boundary-pushing album to date. Delivered in all caps, the beat loaded ‘ENERGY’ is the Lawrence brothers’ third studio album to date, unleashed post-lockdown with limited promo after five years away.

Bursting out of the gates with Watch Your Step, an attention-grabbing breakbeat bop written in collaboration with Kelis, Disclosure blend their certified dance sounds with her smooth tones to achieve heady perfection. It’s followed up by Lavender, an equally soulful offering starring Channel Tres.

Disclosure's ability to craft effortlessly on point earworms remains unrivalled. The raucous and provocative My High, featuring  Aminé and Slowthai, adds grit and dexterity to the duo’s portfolio.

Coming across as a potentially messy ode to vacuous hedonism, in truth the track outlines Disclosure’s most significant progress to date, exhibiting their confidence in creating the sounds they enjoy as opposed to just sticking with what is the expected of them.

There’s also been some wise editing, as when expanded into a deluxe package ‘ENERGY’ loses its bite. Additions such as the single Ecstasy pull the boys backwards, feeling more familiar with their earlier work. The repetitive production here weakens the album’s overall mission statement, and Expressing What Matters also follows suit. It almost blends into the background, shuffling aimlessly towards the exit.

But ‘ENERGY’ delivers an impressive punch with intelligently engineered material. By playing to the brothers’ established strengths while evolving their sound, it ensures that Disclosure remain ahead of the curve.
