It’s all there in the title of Jenny Lewis’s new album. Armed with an uplifting set of tracks, some stemming from a songwriting workshop hosted by none other than Beck, the Nashville transplant sounds positively elated on ‘Joy’all’.

Produced by one of country and Americana’s most in demand names, Dave Cobb, it is a sepia-tinged voyage that, despite taking in plenty of life's dark detours, keeps happiness as the ultimate destination.

Lewis has always had a studious approach to her compositions, displaying an intricate knowledge of the music she draws influence from.

Now delving deeper into classic soul and dripping with a Sun Records swing she has created a record with a vintage feel so deeply ingrained that it becomes tricky to put a timestamp on.

Whether it's the shuffling false start on Love Feels, which settles into an irresistible groove, or the perfectly placed lap steel throughout (played by Jon Brion), ‘Joy’all’ is a record of west coast bliss, conjuring Lewis’s roots in LA alongside lapping Pacific waves and sunsets that burn for hours.

Lewis’s songwriting class often manifests itself in songs that sound perfectly polished. It is something many often mistake for complacency, accusing her of using production to mask a lack of substance. But her detractors miss the fact that she is more than capable of making music that is outrageously lush but with a hidden bite. A flick through the lyrics to the title track here only proves Lewis’ ability to make a statement, while simultaneously striking out a funk-laden groove.

There is plenty of joy to be found in life, and Lewis channels that into the music on ‘Joy’all’. But she also realises that happiness can’t be forced. “If it ain’t cooked it's raw,” she sings on album closer Chain Of Tears. Sometimes we just have to wait for the good times to roll around.
