Dexys Midnight Runners will release a 30th Anniversary special edition of their 1980 debut album 'Searching For The Young Soul Rebels' on October 11th 2010 through EMI.
Following a skip along the radio dial, taking in Deep Purple, Sex Pistols and The Specials, so begins one the greatest British debut albums of all time.
Released in 1980, Dexys Midnight Runnners' 'Searching For The Young Soul Rebels' blasted its way into the public's consciousness, nowhere more so than on the album's no.1 single 'Geno', a stirring tribute of arrogant intent to Northern Soul legend Geno Washington.
Forming in Birmingham in 1978, Dexys' passionate mix of punk attitude, love of soul(ful) music, books and film, created a gang of eight men from the Mean Streets ready to take on all comers, particularly phoneys. The brain child of former Killjoy's singer Kevin Rowland and guitarist Kevin 'Al' Archer, they immediately set to work writing, rehearsing and then acquiring a reputation as one of the most incendiary live bands in the country.
Initially signing to EMI imprint Oddball Records (run by Bernard Rhodes) in 1979, following the release of their debut single 'Dance Stance' (later re-recorded as 'Burn It Down')/ 'I'm Just Looking', the band signed directly to EMI. They continued their run of fantastic singles, b/w brilliant and obscure soul covers, into 1980, with no.1 'Geno' / 'Breaking Down The Walls Of Heartache' and Top 10 'There, There My Dear' / 'The Horse', followed by the release of the 'Soul Rebels' album, which peaked at No.6 on the UK album chart, and final single from the album later in the year, 'Keep It Part Two' / 'One Way Love'. The band finished the year performing Geno on a Top Of The Pops Christmas special.
Heard today, 'Searching For The Young Soul Rebels' still sounds as fresh as it did 30 years ago, and is staggering in the breadth of its inimitable, soulful ambition and defiance.
This 30th Anniversary Special Edition features the original album, plus a bonus disc which includes all the singles' quality b-sides and a number of previously unreleased Manchester Square Demos, plus previously unavailable on CD, John Peel and Kid Jensen Radio 1 sessions.
It's time, once again, to "welcome the New Soul Vision."
