Boyband extraordinaire JLS and hip-hop prince Tinie Tempah have both been the main victors at this year’s MOBO (Music of Black Origin) Awards. Both acts won two awards each at the ceremony, which was held last night in Liverpool’s Echo Arena.
JLS were awarded the ‘Best Album’ and ‘Best UK act’ awards and were greeted with huge screams from fans at the fifteenth annual award ceremony. Tinie Tempah, won ‘Best Newcomer’ and ‘Best Video’ for his single ‘Frisky’. The rapper has has a hugely successful year, earning two Number One singles. His album, Disc-Overy also reached the top spot last weekend.
Othe major winners on the night included N-Dubz, Eminem and Plan B, who apparently can’t go a day without winning awards for his recent album The Defamation of Strickland Banks.
JLS received an almost hysterical response from their hoards of female fans. This wasn’t helped when the band performed with Gym Class Heroes singer Travis McCoy on a version of his massive 2010 single, ‘Billionaire’.
The awards, which were founded in 1995 are intended as a celebration for performers of any race or nationality who perform black music. When asked about the current role of the awards, Mobo’s organiser Kanya King said: "A lot of UK artists are dominating the charts. But if you look at the nominations we've also got a lot of rising stars. There are a lot of artists who've been grinding away, working phenomenally hard, but don't got the recognition. If they don't get the recognition here, where else are they going to get it?"
