‘Glee’ managed to walk away with three trophies at the prestigious Golden Globe Awards last night. The musical TV show took home the award for ‘Best Musical or Comedy TV Series’ as well as ‘Best Supporting Actor’ for Chris Colfer and ‘Best Supporting Actress in a Musical or Comedy Series’ for Jane Lynch (aka fierce cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester).
The show earned the top award as a television comedy for the second year in a row, celebrating another year of huge ratings and impressive A-list bookings. Celebrities to have appeared on the show since their last Golden Globe triumph include Britney Spears and Gwyneth Paltrow, who gave an impressive performance of Cee Lo Green’s ‘Forget You’.
Chris Colfer gave one of the more emotional acceptance speeches of the evening after winning ‘Best Supporting Actor’ for his role as openly gay teen Kirt Hummel: the young actor chose to thank "the kids that our show celebrates that are constantly told no by bullies in their school and they can't be who they are...Well, screw that, kids."
Meanwhile, Nine inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor and his collaborator Atticus Ross won ‘Best Original Score’ for ‘The Social Network’, while ‘Best Original Song’ was awarded to Dianne Warren for ‘You Haven’t Seen The Last of Me’, a song performed by Cher in the musical ‘Burlesque’.
Despite a packed auditorium of Hollywood’s finest, some of the more entertaining moments of the evening came from host Ricky Gervais, who chose to push the boundaries of taste in the right direction for the second year running. The English host rattled through a ballsy monologue, taking one Hollywood target at a time. Charlie Sheen was first as he said: “It’s going to be a night of partying and heavy drinking — or as Charlie Sheen calls it, breakfast.” Gervais continued with another thinly-veiled insult as he said: “Also not nominated I Love You Phillip Morris. Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor. Two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay. So, the complete opposite of some famous Scientologist. My lawyers helped me with the wording of that joke.”
The Golden Globes ceremony was broadcast live on NBC from the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
