With the memories of 2009’s spectacular comeback still bright, Blur fans may be getting another treat sooner than expected with the news that Blur look likely to be releasing their first new material since ‘13’ and touring it.
Drummer Dave Rowntree confirmed the suggestions made late in 2010 by lead signer Damon Albarn when he stated "something is going to happen" in 2011. "We've got nothing concrete".
Rowntree went on to give further information in an interview with Gigwise saying "[We're] trying to put something in place. Quite when, I don't know ... [and] who knows that it's going to end up like. What I do know is that we don't want to commit ourselves to anything vast at the moment."
In a later interview with NME Rowntree scaled back the rumour a little but left enough of a hint that fans can expect to hear more news of some new recordings in the near future "You can't really play the festivals or try and get a big tour together until you release something ... We're in touch."
2009’s reunion tour was a huge event including back to back sell out nights at Hyde Park (which were later released on DVD) and a headline performance on Glastonbury’s Pyramid stage which Damon went on to call a career highlight.
Blur followed that by releasing ‘Fool’s Day’ as a limited edition single as part of record store day in 2010 and hinted at a series of singles to follow talking in November 2010.
"We're dipping our toes in the water, which is why we did the single in the way we did," Rowntree said. "We've got all our mates back, and that's the main thing. That's the one thing we don't want to lose."
All signs are positive for a second comeback. Stereoboard will, as always, keep you up to date with any further information.
