Stereoboard Tour of the Week – Frank Turner

Friday, 25 February 2011 Written by Rob Sleigh

Let’s face it – Frank Turner could probably be voted for Tour of the Week every week. As anyone who has been a fan of the singer since he started his solo career five years ago will confirm, it seems that the former Million Dead frontman is very rarely not on tour. Having just completed a string of dates, which included his own NME Awards Show, it’s unsurprising to discover that the travelling folkster wasn’t going to hang around long before announcing his next bunch of gigs. Lined up for May, in the run-up to his fourth album ‘England Keep My Bones’, Frank Turner will tour the UK once again for almost the entire month, making stops in most parts of the country. Despite the constant reappearances, we’re certainly not getting bored of him yet.

Following on from 2009’s ‘Poetry of the Deed’, Frank has confirmed the release of his new album on 6th June. The album will include the track ‘I Still Believe’, which has become a live favourite over the past twelve months and was recently featured on his latest EP ‘Rock & Roll’. 2010 proved to be a typically hectic year for Frank. In addition to the relentless touring, he also managed to squeeze in a European tour supporting Green Day (including a massive show at Wembley Stadium), performances at almost every festival under the sun and a year-end tour with punk legends Social Distortion over in the US, where he went down a storm. His British festival appearances included no less than three separate sets at Glastonbury and a guest performance with his heroes NOFX at Reading.

In 2005, after four years and two albums as the lead vocalist for London-based post-hardcore group Million Dead, Frank Turner parted ways with the band and embarked on a solo career. Leaving behind the heavy punk rock of his former group, he instead chose to write songs in a more traditional folk and country style, inspired by some of his earlier influences. Releasing his debut solo album ‘Sleep is for the Week’ in 2007, which featured little more than him and his acoustic guitar, Frank immediately began to gather a strong following of fans, many of whom already knew him for his work with Million Dead. Despite the change in direction, Frank still managed to hang on to much of the punk rock energy of his former band, which has continued to attract many hardcore rock fans to his brand of music. A perfect example of this can be seen in June, when Frank is due to play at Download Festival in Donington Park.

With the May tour already lined up and another bunch of dates expected in November, it looks like Frank Turner is already planning to outdo himself after last year. After winning the No Half Measures Award at the Kerrang Awards last year, the singer appears to be following that by proving that things aren’t likely to change anytime soon.
