Stereoboard Tour of the Week – Ryan Adams

Friday, 18 March 2011 Written by Rob Sleigh

Don’t you mean Bryan Adams? No – definitely not. This particular member of the Adams family (they’re not actually related) is not at all fond of being confused with the Canadian rocker. Anyone that has heard about his infamous run-ins with fans certainly won’t be making any such mix-up in the near future. There have been several reports in the past regarding alleged occasions where Ryan Adams has had concert-goers thrown out and even fought with people that have dared to request ‘Summer of 69’ during one of his shows. Thankfully, according to an interview with Spin Magazine a few years back, the singer has since sought help for his anger issues: “I had to go into therapy because of the whole Bryan Adams ‘Summer of 69’ thing. I turned that into such a negative thing that it paralysed me. So now it’s not like someone’s not going to shout ‘Summer of 69’, but I can choose to not let that ruin my evening.”

So rest assured that if you do decide to shout out for one of Bryan Adams’ 80s hits during one of Ryan Adams’ upcoming June tour dates, you’ll probably be safe. However, it’s probably best not to anyway because, to be honest, it’s just not very funny.

ImageIn June, the alt-country troubadour will be playing his first UK tour since his 12th album ‘Cardinals III/IV’, which was released at the end of last year. The album was a welcome return to his usual style following the release of his “sci-fi metal” album ‘Orion’ earlier in 2010. It also represented the return of backing band The Cardinals, with whom Adams had parted ways in 2009. However, the songs were actually recorded in 2007. ‘Cardinals III/IV’ is the fifth album from The Cardinals, who Adams founded in 2005 after the release of his first five solo albums.

Ryan Adams started life as a punk rock singer, but moved onto alt-country after forming the band Whiskeytown in 1994. He released three albums with the band before leaving to record his first solo record ‘Heartbreaker’ in 2000. Its successor ‘Gold’, which came out the following year, exceeded the success of his debut, becoming an international hit and a Top 20 album in the UK. The video to the album’s lead single ‘New York, New York’, which has since become one of his most well-known tracks, was recorded in Manhattan a few days before the September 11th attacks. A message at the end of the video dedicated it to “those who lost their lives… and those who worked to save them.” Profits were donated to a September 11th charity.

Adams has released eight solo albums to date, including 2007’s ‘Easy Tiger’, which gave him his first Top 10 album in the US. In 2004, he also had a minor UK hit single with a cover of Oasis’s ‘Wonderwall’. In an interview with Spin Magazine in 2008, Noel Gallagher gave his approval of the cover, stating: “I think Ryan Adams is the only person who ever got that song right. I'd love to do the Ryan Adams version, but in front of 60,000 Oasis fans that wouldn't be possible.”
