My Chemical Romance 'Honoured' to Headling Reading and Leeds

American emo-rockers My Chemical Romance have expressed their delight at being chosen to headline this summer’s Reading and Leeds Festivals, with singer Gerard Way admitting he was ‘honoured’.

The line-up to the massive festivals was announced yesterday, with very mixed reactions from fans across the country. MCR will be playing the headline slot on the Friday of Reading festival, and on the Saturday of the Leeds leg, following on from 30 Seconds to Mars and the Offspring.

And frontman Way couldn’t hide his excitement to be sharing the stage with massive bands like Muse, the Strokes and Pulp.

"We're honoured to be sharing headlining with them. The Strokes are one of our all time favourite bands."

The band previously played at the three-day event, to a poor reception, which saw the crowd hurling bottles and cups at the stage. Way insists that the crowd turned to love them, though.

“It was a real cultural shift for the band. Something really awesome happened that day because there was a lot of negative tabloid press. Following Slayer was tough.

"It was a bit combative at first then it turned into this amazing thing by the end where everyone was singing along."

This year’s Reading/Leeds line-up was one of the most anticipated in years, but following yesterday’s announcement, reactions have been very mixed – especially on Twitter. Emilytheloser tweeted: 'Is it just me that thinks the Reading and Leeds line up is a bit crap?'.

Much of the criticism has been aimed at MCR themselves, too – codenamemilo posted ‘My Chemical Romance should not be headlining Reading, they got bottled last time and they didn't even headline. Poor decision by organisers!’ - a fair shout to the men in charge of one of the biggest festivals in the UK.

Well, MCR are happy to be there, you’ll have to wait until August to find out whether the fans are happy they’re there...
