New York DJ and TV personality Megatron has been shot dead in New York. The music personality, who was born Corey McGriff, was found dead with a gunshot wound in his chest, according to police reports. The 32-year-old was shot while walking to a shop near his home on Staten Island in New York. The incident occurred during the early hours of yesterday morning (March 27th).
Megatron was best known for his work on BET’s radio show 106 & Park.. He was recognised as having his finger on the pulse of hip-hop music, often promoting new acts who went on to break ground and find major success. Nicki Minaj, one such artist who was championed early on by the DJ, paid her respects on Twitter yesterday. She said: "Rest In Peace DJ Megatron. My thoughts are with your family and friends @ hot 97."
Megatron also appeared on a number of Television shows and films. The DJ can be seen alongside Roc-A-Fella co-founder Damon Dash in the 2005 movie ‘State Property 2’.
Speaking on the shooting, The DJ’s mother Louvenia McGriff said: "It was bad timing - being in the wrong place at the wrong time." She went on to claim that the motive for the crime was robbery.
Police are yet to make an arrest after the shooting, but have claimed that the incident is unlikely to have been motivated by robbery: the DJ was found with his wallet and phone in his pockets after the incident. Police have also claimed that McGriff did not put up a fight when confronted, claiming that other than the gunshot, the DJ had no other wounds identifying a struggle.
