Fleet Foxes Declare Their Support For Illegal Downloading

Fleet Foxes singer Robin Pecknold has made a rare contribution to the argument in defence of illegal downloading. The singer and guitarist argued that music should have no inherent cash value, before going on to insinuate that musicians have no need for the large amounts of money earned through record sales.

Speaking to NME, Pecknold asserted that file-sharing was a crucial factor for the success of Fleet Foxes’ self-titled debut album in 2008. He went on to state that he still supports the activity, even with the approaching release of the band’s sophomore album, ‘Helplessness Blues’.

Pecknold said: "How much money does one person need before it's just a number and I can buy whatever I want - and just be like a big baby?"

He has previously defended online file-sharing, claiming that illegal downloads will enrich future music by granting modern musicans access to a greater variety of music than previous generations. Speaking to the BBC, he previously said: "That will only make music richer as a platform. That [downloading] was how I discovered almost everything when I was a teenager - my dad brought home a modem."

However, Pecknold was quick to express his dissatisfaction after NME supposedly set up his answers to give a sensationalist angle. Messaging the music magazine on his Twitter account, he said: “Being interviewed by the NME is like being interrogated for a crime you didn’t commit. Every question is a set up”

Pecknold continued: “I said music has no inherent CASH value. Why the sensationalism all the time? Cash value of all ‘art’ is subjective is all I was trying to say. A [Pollock] is worth millions for cultural reasons, not for cost of paint. That the prices of music ‘products’ have dropped post-filesharing (post-scarcity) proves the lack of objective CASH value.”
