Lady Gaga’s much-anticipated studio album ‘Born This Way’ has leaked online today (May 19th), five days ahead of its official scheduled release date.
The LP was made available for European users to stream via the website of free paper The Metro and Spotify in Sweden, Norway, Spain, Finland and the Netherlands. However, it would appear that fans weren’t content to simply stream the tracks, as the album became available as a torrent earlier this morning.
Gaga, who has already released four tracks from the album via iTunes, made the tracks available on Metro.co.uk as part of a promotional campaign which saw her take up place as guest editor for the London-based paper. It is yet to be confirmed exactly how the tracks were leaked before their planned release on May 23rd.
The leak has given reviewers a chance to get their hands on the album earlier than expected, and so far critics have been divided on the material. Rolling Stone declared that Gaga had "still managed to pack in some surprises", while Entertainment Weekly called the LP "an inconsistent blend of icy techno-pop and greeting-card empowerment that's more a triumph of production than songwriting."
On this side of the pond, NME have been kind to their recent cover star, describing the album as "a relentless torrent of heavy metal rave pop." They went on to assert that "‘Born This Way’ is an exercise in the pushing of everything to its ultimate degree. And for all the black, white and silver, it passes that test with flying colors."
Interscope Records, the division of Universal Music Group in charge of Gaga’s record sales, are yet to make a comment on the leak.
