Bruce Springsteen paid tribute to saxophonist and long-term collaborator Clarence Clemons at his funeral in Palm Beach, Florida, yesterday (June 23rd).
Springsteen offered a eulogy for the E Street Band saxophonist, who passed away on Sunday (June 19th) a week after suffering a serious stroke. The singer described Clemons as “a man of unconditional love” before performing at the ceremony in his honour.
Also performing at the Palm Beach service were Jackson Browne and the E Street Band, as well as Clemons’ own nephew performing a rendition of ‘Amazing Grace’ on the saxophone.
Springsteen talked about the saxophonist, describing him as "a man of unconditional love, but his love came with a lot of conditions. He was a complex guy. But when you were in his presence, it was like being in a sovereign nation."
The ‘Born To Run’ singer also offered a statement about Clemons on his official website. He said: "Clarence lived a wonderful life. He carried within him a love of people that made them love him. He created a wondrous and extended family. He loved the saxophone, loved our fans and gave everything he had every night he stepped on stage."
Most recently, Clemons was featured in the video for Lady Gaga’s ‘The Edge Of Glory’, the last track which he featured on before passing away. A hoard of other artists have been keen to sing the praises of Clemons, and the likes of Coldplay, U2 and Slash have all offered kind words about the saxophonist.
