The band are a 5 piece of tenacious, funk, electro, fused vitality hailing from Grimsby, and I tell you what they kick some velocity that should make you shut up and listen. During to the sound check the musical appreciation and capability of the band came through so much so it was captivating. Yes the sound check. They played hard, and came alive, dragging the soggy Friday evening to a warmer climate.
Supernormals are:
John Williams: Synth keys and Effects.
Sara Peterson: Vocals
Sean Winfarrah: Guitar
Mike Leaning: Bass
Wayne Rigg: Drums
Scene: Cleethorpes, Gypsy Tears on soggy Friday 24th June. Supernormals gig. Supernormals describe themselves as electro, funk, fusion; with a slice of rock into the mix. The band cite their influences as Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Basement Jaxx. Melodic rapture provided and vivacious vocals. And hell they have been fused together with passion and pizzazz, that sometimes often missing in the higher stretches of the modern musical persuasion. Supernormals have a solid concoction. There’s no faulting the energy that was pulsating from and surrounding every track that they played. It’s said when you see your lyrics being sung back to you it’s the sign of achievement; well I tell you I could see lip motions and gyrations all over the pub. The set was complied of the band’s original material. The band opened with their track Shut up and play. Shut up and play, is a demand with a backdrop of heavy funk beat, bending bass with a heavy drum drive and riveting riffs. Synth pop drive moulded acid lines. They want to play and deserve to be heard because there’s for sure no shortage of the elusive it thing that is so often sought by talent hunters.
John leads like a possessed musical maestro driving it together all in rhythmical effect and transient directory. Saying that the Supernormals played together, as one and played with effortful ability, with echoes of their influences that shone through. Their track 'Ya Ya Your Disposal' merged a ska heavy beat edged with a bopping, bouncing synth line combined with accomplished vocal lines. Reminiscent sounds of Madness' 'Baggy Trousers' augmented with rolling bass and guitar lines breaking through in the breakdown. They reminisce old masters in modern environments with outstanding enthusiasm. If you’re looking for musical mischief then you’ve come to the wrong place because this band mean musical business. From the start of the sound check they were captivating. The energy was infectious. Sara, lyricists and vocalist moved the blooming stars in the effort to get the attendees along and up. The set was played performing to controlled extreme. By controlled; eased enunciation is what I mean. The band were played together, with an infectious enthusiasm and pure musical indulgence. For the girls is a stand up and listen track which was played live with evolutionary streams of wonderment. Wayne’s drumming beating through and tied rhythms graciously with the bands backing tracks. Layered vocals creating, rich and interesting sounds. Undulating bass that beasted brocaiously. The set was fully original material including U.T.O.V. full of their electronic pulsations and vocal contemplations. That comes alive on the stage and does not disappoint from the recording based version. It’s a tough job to break down what they’re about when the whole is more capable of doing that for you...listen.
Supernormals worked bloody hard during the 2 hour set. Stirring the half-arsed attention of some of the crowd to a deserved interest. The encore saw Supernormals invited vocalist Penny Laity for a version of Jessie J’s 'Do it like a Dude'. Outstripped the original, off the cuff but right on the music currency.
From the first moment it is easy to see that Supernormals are captivating and work hard to provide the best they can for the fans. The performance is brilliantly that, a performance, despite the low turn out… due to the traditional British summer weather, they were providing a performance set to distract. The band’s sound merges together the talents of each member into a articulate sound that flows effortlessly. But the show that they provide is full of effort, hard work resulting in full visual and aural enthral.
Supernormals set was full of energy that deserved of listened to their tracks online; it was a treat to watch them perform live and they shouldn’t be missed. Say here there’s no doubt that Supernormals have not only the recording talent evident on their Myspace and Facebook accounts but performance quality that is second to none. In no doubt they can play live, their hearts were on the stage and in every beat. Played for 2 hours throughout an excessive energy boost that Buzz Lightyear would have been jealous of. Glastonbury sure did miss out.
