Jennifer Finch has passed away aged 59.
News of the L7 bassist's death was shared via her Instagram account just a few hours ago, where only five days before it was announced the Los Angeles multidisciplinary artist was suffering "an aggressive form of brain cancer", for which she had multiple surgeries and suffered setbacks and complications.
A GoFundMe page was created "to help cover professional in-home nursing care, physical and speech therapy, medical equipment, home-care expenses, and the essential support Jennifer needs to live with as much comfort, dignity, autonomy, and quality of life as possible."
With an outpouring of support from the musical community, including donations from Garbage, Kathleen Hanna, Bag Religion's Brett Gurewitz and his wife Gina Davis, Sub Pop Records and Warped Tour founder Kevin Lyman, the GoFundMe's original target was quickly exceeded and well wishing messages were shared in droves.
Finch was a member of the original line-up of L7, joining the band in 1986 and recording their first four albums: 1988's 'Hungry For Stink', 1990's 'Smell The Magic', 1992 'Bricks Are Heavy' and 1994's 'Hungry For Stink'.
L7 toured the world headlining shows and making an impression at festivals, with Nirvana's Kurt Cobain one of their biggest fans. Finch left the band in '96, but rejoined in 2014 and appeared on their latest LP, 2019's 'Scatter The Rats'. She used the break to explore other musical projects, creating the band The Shocker, which she fronted.
L7 were due to embark on the first North American leg of their farewell world tour, billed as the Last Hurrah Tour, this October. It is currently unknown if they will continue with the shows.
Since the news of Finch's passing broke, tributes from the music community have flooded social media, including posts from fellow musicians, labels, publications and, of course, devastated fans, including myself. Her L7 bandmates have shared the below statement:
“We are shattered by the loss of our beloved bandmate, sister and friend Jennifer Finch, whose fierce spirit, humor and boundless creativity helped shape L7 and changed all of our lives forever. Jennifer was a true original who lived entirely on her own terms, and the impact she made on music, art and everyone lucky enough to know her cannot be measured. We love her beyond words and will carry her with us always. Rest in power our dear friend.
With Love,
L7”
