Charlie Simpson: “'X Factor’ is a monster”

Saturday, 30 July 2011 Written by James Conlon

Charlie Simpson has slammed the ‘X Factor’, describing the show as ‘irrelevant’, ‘a monster’ and ‘a machine’. The former Fightstar singer, who is set to release his solo single ‘Parachutes’ on August 7th, also went on to claim that pop music is currently in a ‘transitional place’ leaving executives and recording artists unsure where to turn next.

Speaking to Digital Spy about the Simon Cowell-fronted singing competition, Simpson said: "It's irrelevant. It is its own monster, so I don't think it affects the music industry really. There is always a song that comes out at Christmas; some of the artists last, some don't, and it goes on - it's a machine."

He went on to claim that the competition does not form part of the music industry, but exists separately for its own purposes.

Simpson, who performed as part of Busted for several years before joining Fightstar, also went on to claim that the music industry is currently in a “wierd place”. He said: "I came into the music industry at the last moment before all the major changes. It had been pretty much the same for 50 years until downloads were introduced.

The singer continued: "Pop music is in a weird place at the moment, and no-one knows which way it is going. I think we're in a transition period - in ten years there will be a system that works."

Charlie Simpson’s debut solo LP ‘Young Pilgrim’ will be released on August 15th. You can view the video for ‘Parachutes’ below:
