Leona Lewis Taken To Court Over ‘Collide’ Copyright Claims

Friday, 05 August 2011 Written by James Conlon

Leona Lewis will have to face a high court battle if she wishes to continue with the release of upcoming single ‘Collide’. Both the singer and her label Syco (owned by ‘X Factor' judge Simon Cowell) are being taken to court by dance producer Avicii, who claims that the ‘Collide’ has used material from his own song ‘Fade Into Darkness’ without prior consent.

Avicii wrote the song over a year ago, prior to being signed to major dance label Ministry Of Sound. The Swedish producer is now looking to place an injunction on Lewis’s track, meaning that the planned release on September 4th would be impossible.

Avicii and Ministry Of Sound have claimed that ‘Fade Into Darkness’ was sent to a number of vocalists in order to find a suitable arrangement, and an entry was received named ‘Collide’ which was not picked up.

However, members of Syco are then said to have found the unnamed vocalist's adaptation of ‘Fade Into Darkness’ and chose to use it as Leona Lewis’s latest single. Avicii continued to claim that he was contacted by Syco seeking the rights to use his track, but he denied granting any permission, instead wanting to release his original version.

Last month both Lewis and Avicii exchanged words on Twitter, where the ‘X Factor’ singer claimed that Avicii was aware of ‘Collide’ and willing to let the track be released with his sample. She said: "With regards to my song, avicii was aware & agreeing publishing splits for himself and his manager. When avicii sent his track out to have a song written over it I totally fell in love with this version and i think he's super talented."
